A vehicle cannot legally be handed over without a valid driving licence — no rental in Pondicherry should offer you one without it.

Best at sunrise, when the seafront stretch is closed to traffic and the whole town seems to be out walking. Park near the Gandhi statue end and take in the sea wall on foot.
Auroville
Roughly 25–30 minutes north through shaded canopy roads. Carry your ID for the visitor centre, and plan the ride before midday when the light and the temperature are both kinder.
Paradise Beach & Chunnambar
About 8 km south of town; you ride to the Chunnambar boathouse and take a short boat across the backwater. Easy half-day trip on a scooter.
Also worth the ride: Sri Aurobindo Ashram in the old town, the Botanical Garden, Serenity Beach for the surf crowd, and the quiet fishing hamlets along the East Coast Road.
